[ The beach fades away, leaving everyone back in the comfortable and familiar surroundings of the clearing and their-- beloved?-- train. There are some new stars in the sky, twinkling in ginger goldenrod, thyme apple, senna terracotta, jasmine blue, and clover pink.

The sound of a giggle fills the air and leaves behind bubbles-- touching one will give the uncontrollable urge to hug the nearest person. They will persist throughout the night. ]

[ He's got his first win and token so honestly, he's in a much better mood than usual. It's also time to test some shit so he'll be sitting at a table with some pieces of his other sets of clothes laid on it, and while it's some blink-and-you'll-miss-it shit, they're each changing position and being switched around after being surrounded by a blue light ]

Getting something more substantial would have been better. I feel like I'm four again.

They always got to make it drawn out. Some things can be big, other things are just laughably small.

So is it just teleporting small objects?

Hard to say. These are just the first few items I could find to test on. I know I can't teleport people or myself yet, and that I'm getting unreasonably tired even for this much. The plan is to keep going until I'm completely exhausted.

We got a vacuum cleaner, that's a midsized item?

I should test if I can do it within the usual distance limits as well, or if it's even shorter now. Where's the vacuum cleaner?

By the memory screen in the communal car. I figure it's better to just sleep it in the open until all the glitter is gone.

I'm past one thousand sparks now, by the way. Obviously, since I got my first token. Death fund's coming along nicely.

There are weights in the gym, though I don't think you can take those out of the car. What distance are you looking for? I can always pick up rocks on my morning run.

[Nods.] That's good to hear. I have a little over four thousand. [Or six thousands if his request for a car expansion doesn't go through, but he'll see.]

Did you actually get sparks from the bet?

[ shaking his head at the question ]

No, not yet. I haven't had the chance to talk with my opponent yet. But considering we won and his team didn't, I'm pretty sure it's a win for me.

As for the distance I'm looking for — I can't move myself or anything else for long distances, and that's when I'm at the peak of my powers. It'd be visible distances only.

Might be safer that way, visible distance thing. Teleporters back hope always needed a a device at the entrance and exit because calculating for the movement of celestial bodies was a nightmare.

How far could they teleport?

Usually it's just for on world to possible orbiting stations.

There are some that can go to other planets in the same system, but that's usually if people go to a teleporter nexus set up for emergencies.

It's not recommended to use those if you don't have to and definitely not without protection. There's extreme heat and it can be very hard on a person just....laws of physics wise. Bigger the distance, the worst the effects.

Makes sense. They were based on technology, not any one's person own ability, were they?

[Nods.] Slipspace technology. Same thing our ships use.

Most of our abilities are based on technology. If there's anything like natural superhero abilities, it's not a commonplace thing to happen. Genkins, Church, and....Caboose? Are the only ones who might not be a technology thing that I could give a specific example about.

Considering how advanced the technology shown in your memories seems to be, that checks out. Doubt they'd have bothered to make advancements like that if people could do those things naturally.

Abilities like mine aren't common in my world either. My siblings and I are the only ones I know of.

At least do it naturally and have it be widespread. Competition is a hell of a motivator.

Really? So like, a sudden gene mutation, or was it an actual experiment?

No experimentation, as far as I'm aware. Luther and I are from the same mother, but for all I know, that was the only case. There were 43 mothers across the world who gave birth simultaneously, despite not having been pregnant when the day had started.

My father got his hands on 7 of us. Everyone else, well. They probably died.
