Newbies + Monthly Prompts!

[It's that time again: this morning, you're awoken by the jingle associated with an official message from your Chain -- the usual "newbie time" balloon animation and text:]

WELCOME NEW HEROES

[This round's newbies are waking up in their rooms, in the usual nondescript undies or team pyjamas.

Outside, the cold snap has broken. It's back to jungle warmth, though the sudden change in temperature appears to have caused a thick fog. So thick, in fact, that you can't see more than a few feet in front of you -- and it doesn't burn off with the daylight.

For the next few days, Origin Star will be lost in the mist, and should you venture too far, you may be too. Because out there in the humid dim are willow-the-wisps, faint lights in the fog that will lead you to perilous terrain or into the jaws of beasts.

Sometimes, you may also hear a voice -- a distant song from across the sea, in the direction of the corrupted island. If you get too close, long and spindly arms will reach out of the water and pull you down, for a kiss from a scaly human-like being that sucks all the emotion out of you and leaves you feeling hollow and lacking empathy for others. The cure is time -- you'll be better in a day or so, but you can speed it up by basking in the warm feelings of others.]

We had a kid on the team at first. Coral. We joked about the dad thing.

[not that she was actually a kid but... he shrugs]

I see. Are you an item or merely coparenting?

Uh, just coparenting.

[comingstorm]

Very well. Anything else I should know about you?

[crimeson]

[scratches the back of his head.]

Goddess... there's a lot, but doesn't that go both ways? You're not gonna tell me about yourself?

[comingstorm]

... I'm the captain of a specialized unit of god hunters who happens to also be the host of the evil god we hunt. I may at times require you to chain me to my bed at night, if you are as strong as you look.

There. Now you.

[crimeson]

[whistles, crossing his arms.]

Former mercenary-turned-border guard-turned-cop-turned-teacher of tactics at a military academy. I'm as strong as I look and definitely have your back if you need wrangling.

[comingstorm]

Very good. Tell me about this team.

[crimeson]

If you mean our teammates, s'probably better that you form your own opinions?

[comingstorm]

I mean how does it function? Who leads? What are our general principles? Goals?

[crimeson]

It ain't that sorta team, man. We're just a bundle of people shoved together doin' our best to get by.

[comingstorm]

That seems remarkably inefficient.

[crimeson]

Yeah, well, it's not a terribly efficient situation.

[comingstorm]

And this ragtag group is to save the universe? That's rather worrying.

[crimeson]

You're welcome to try and take the reins yourself if you'd like.

[comingstorm]

I suppose I should first ask if it's actually working?

[crimeson]

If it's working, the results aren't drastic enough to really tell. Which isn't helping a lot with the whole positive feelings schtick, but we're tryin'.

[comingstorm]

...Trying. Well, that's fine. I'm sure imminent death is as good a motivation as any.

[crimeson]

You may have noticed but I'm not the warm and fuzzy, hold hands and sing type. Teamwork, however, I am for.

Yeah I'd gathered that first bit. Nice to hear the second, though.

I'm a soldier, I understand the necessity of relying on your support in general. I'll be relying on this team. But I want to understand everyone on it.

[crimeson]

I can't really help you with that last part. Though I'll be happy to support you with pretty much anything else.
