The Sixteenth Trial

When: Day 37, afternoon
Where: The Hermit's Tent

[With the usual jostle of the train, the Hermit’s tent appears in the clearing. His deep, cheerful voice rings out:]

That last Trial was a bit of a mess, wasn’t it? Well, rest assured our dear Vampire friend is very sorry about it.

Of course that doesn’t make you feel better, but how about a mood booster? “Come hither”, and let’s think positive!

[Upon entering the tent, you’ll find yourself on a round, black-tiled platform at the bottom of a clear glass elevator. Look outside and you'll spot the other two groups in their own elevators, facing you on the other walls of a triangular pit. You can't reach or hear them at the moment, but they look safe enough.

In your own elevator, you’ll find a podium with a speaker and a push-to-talk microphone. Taped next to them is a laminated paper containing the rules, titled:

[Grumbling. He's dying. He lifts a hand to touch his neck because it just feels sensitive and all after being kissed. Rudely! Or rather, he's just kind of more aware of it so he has to touch it himself before that awareness and the ghost memory of lips makes him simply die.]

Promise me you'll actually rest a bit when I drop you off?

I'm pretty sure you're a lot cuter then me. You have that sort of face that looks open and innocent.

Yeah. I had just been looking to check on Noon when I woke up and then I realized there was a trial...

[Yes he knows he has a baby face shut up.]

Personally I think it's more cute when a more manly handsome guy gets flustered, but maybe that's me.

Noon is looking better though, at least. Did you help him with his mana problems?

But I can have a scary face sometimes. Not sure if you could pull off scary. You have all the time cute.

Yeah. We formed a contract.

He's also forbidden me from other contracts, which. You know. Fair. [He knows it's fair.] But temporary Mana help shouldn't be a problem so....that's still there.

[He just sighs. Scary is still out of reach after over a thousand years, thus is life. Oh well.]

Having a scary face can be useful at times. Anyway, good for him. You are way too prone to offering yourself way too easily.

Definitely. I'm not begrudging it. I'm just saying you're cuter.

[He shrugged.] It's like 80H said. I'm dedicated to the mission. The mission is keeping everyone alive and if I did shit like I did in my memories regularly? I'm good at least living through things myself. So keeping others alive is important to keep in mind.

Not help how all three of you have been some level of dumbass in caring for yourselves. [A little bit of judging for you. Mostly them.]

[He gives up on the face discussion. Dusk wins.]

I don't know how it is for Noon and the other weirdo [weirdo said fondly] but I'm not going to contract to anyone who isn't very willing to accept I have no idea how to terminate a contract.

I know I'm not the same thing as they are. But we're similar. Ghosts of the past who need the living to keep us "real" in the present, I guess, as far as I can tell.

You can't expect ghosts to be that great at staying alive.

[It's a joke.]

[You know what you get for that joke? A very rough hair ruffle that's basically a noogie.]

There's a difference between being bad at staying alive and finding death more acceptable than relying on someone else.

I don't offer myself up because I'm content dying for others. I offer myself up because I believe I can find a way to take it and make it out to the other side.

[His hair... is exactly the same mess it was before this noogie. Magical. He laughs softly, fond.]

Yeah. That's true, there's a difference. And I'm relying on people. In all kinds of ways. Honestly I feel like I'm relying on people so much I'll never pay it back. But I can worry about that after we save the universe.

I'm pretty sure if people relied on you the exact same way you're relying on them, you'd say they didn't owe you anything.

[Amused, but also put out.]

I think you saw it right? The bank of Rean has the highest interest rate in the nation. Getting in dept to me might not be the best idea unless you intend to pay it your whole life.

I didn't think you'd be into rope but I guess that's worth remembering if it does come up.

[He shrugs, looking away.]

I don't know, just a thought. I can't over think and worry much if I'm tied down sort of thing. Plus level of trust....

[Still smugly content with himself but listening and more thoughtful about it.]

That's the appeal, isn't it? Being trusted or putting your trust in someone. And I can see where I guy like you would definitely get a lot out of having someone else take charge, being able to let go and just get into it without having to worry about keeping a measure of defense or control up.

But I thought you didn't have an interest in sex? I mean I guess there's ways to be fulfilled just by being tied up, too, but those are usually still physical, and a lot more involved.

....well, it is a question of how much is the affect that I might be under. But it could also be I'm demisexual, which seems possible. I definitely knew what I was doing. Not an expert, but I have at least enough experience to have not been flying blind.

But getting more into it, it's less I'm interested in the sex as the things around it. I like affection. I like touch. I liked being close to someone. But I was pretty happy with just making out, I could take or leave the rest. And it wasn't like I wanted the sex because I wanted sex, I wanted it because it got me out of my head and it's still a distraction. It feels nice. But if the distraction came in the form of a really good video game, I'd be just as happy.

If anything, I might like the rope stuff more because it's not just about the sex part, it's about the mental and emotional stuff, of getting out an always needs to work headspace.

That makes sense. So when you think about being tied up, what really comes to mind? Sex, touch? Is it more being teased or more being talked to? There's a lot of different ways to do things and they all appeal to people differently.

If getting out of your head and giving control to someone else is what you find attractive, what part of it makes you think of heightened vulnerability and trust and what makes you think of being so focused in the moment that everything else falls away? I think for most people it's some kind of mix of physicality and trust, but physicality can take so many forms--some people even find pain cathartic. It's not really my thing in a hardcore way but I do think a little can be nice, personally. I mean, to take. Inflicting it is harder but if I know the other person really likes it I think it's different.

[He's a little red but if he's going to ask so many invasive questions he has to be open too.]

[He's absolutely not going to admit who it was, especially after he gave so many compliments for Cael. He doesn't even know how frank he is about that sort of thing. It's not like there aren't already a number of candidates on the train.]

Well....part of it, I think is because of how I react to touch. Which is a little less worrisome now, you saw the armor people were wearing in my memory. I suspect I may have just in that for a long time, and...well, not a lot of way to feel touch in things like that.

I'm aware of when people touch me, I don't think I could just ignore it. So when there's a lot of touch, it's hard to focus on anything else like that. Depending on how my head is, it can be overwhelming. [Like when he's touched while feeling guilty.] I'm not even sure if the touch needs to feel good, it just has to be there and without anything else to focus on, that's all I could think about.

So I mostly think about touch. And...the most stressful thing is being uncertain. Something like that, I have no choice, but to listen to orders. Someone else is in charge, someone who could make it clear if I'm doing things right or wrong and I don't have to just hope and pray and that just sounds....really nice.

I'm not worried about pain, but I don't know my reaction to it. I didn't want to risk any blood being drawn since...well, that's why I needed out of my head.

[He's listening, taking mental notes.]

That makes sense. Like I said pain's not my thing usually. When I think about it mainly I think about tying someone up and teasing the hell out of them until they're begging, something like that. Usually just with all kinds of touch.

But the not having to think and just letting the other person be in charge is what appeals to me about the other side of it too.
