[It's that time again: this morning, you're awoken by the jingle associated with an official message from your Chain -- the usual "newbie time" balloon animation and text:]

WELCOME NEW HEROES

[This round's newbies are waking up in their rooms, in the usual nondescript undies or team pyjamas.

Outside, the cold snap has broken. It's back to jungle warmth, though the sudden change in temperature appears to have caused a thick fog. So thick, in fact, that you can't see more than a few feet in front of you -- and it doesn't burn off with the daylight.

For the next few days, Origin Star will be lost in the mist, and should you venture too far, you may be too. Because out there in the humid dim are willow-the-wisps, faint lights in the fog that will lead you to perilous terrain or into the jaws of beasts.

Sometimes, you may also hear a voice -- a distant song from across the sea, in the direction of the corrupted island. If you get too close, long and spindly arms will reach out of the water and pull you down, for a kiss from a scaly human-like being that sucks all the emotion out of you and leaves you feeling hollow and lacking empathy for others. The cure is time -- you'll be better in a day or so, but you can speed it up by basking in the warm feelings of others.]

[ There's a soft, grumbly whine, and as he approaches he'll spy a ... something. An odd, dog-sized something covered in iridescent blue feathers, with wings and a floofy, spiky tail, rubbing its head with its front paws. ]

[ But. But. That scent, that magic, that's all way more interesting than a bump on the noggin. Drops her paws and bounds over to him with a loud squeaky chirp like an oversized canary, pushing her snout at him for a Thorough Sniffing. ]

[Startles back when she bounds over, he wasn't expecting her to get that close and he freezes, holding still for sniffs.]

Er, hello?

[ The dragon has a Yorkshire accent ]

I'm Meridian, I'm on Clover, who are you? [ sniff sniFF SNIFF, honing in on his ring. ] Do you know me? You smell like me.

[OH SOMEONE WHO SPEAKS LIKE ME does she want? To be pet? Pats her snout.]

I don’t know yet - what do you mean I smell like you?

[ YES PET HER. She's toasty warm so it's like petting a feathery electric blanket. Nudges into it with a chirrup, still snuffling. ]

You don't remember? Me neither.

[ Circles around him. ]

My scent's on you. And your ring, it's magic, did you know? It feels like my magic!

[Whoaaaa continues petting you’re so warm]

Why do I have your magic ring? Do I turn into a...

[Tilts his head at her what am I looking at]

...can I transform to look like you too?

[ warm and soft and highly pettable, this is the best life ]

Dragon! [ waggles her ears ] I'm a dragon.

Annnnnnnnd-! I! ... Don't know.

Oh. Hmm. Do you know if you're a dragon that can turn into a human?

[ opens her mouth! ]













[ closes it again with a snap, oooooh ]

[Tilts his head?]

Meridian?

[ Parks her butt on the floor so she can bring her paw to her chin, hm ]

[ HMMMMM ]

Maybe! Maybe! [ cheep!! ] I've got lots, so why not? [ How is the real question. ]

Lots of what? Magic?

Yeah! I can feel it. [ Pats her chest. ] In here.

[ ... ]

But um. I don't remember how it works. Or how to use it. Or what it's for. Or anything.

If you don't remember then maybe you just need to experiment. Do you know how other people use their magic?

[ Tilts her head one way, then the other. ]

Maybe if you can feel it in your chest, you have to focus on it there and draw it out somehow? One of my teammates transforms from a wolf into a human, I bet he'd have some pointers.

What about you, can you feel the magic anywhere? [ Noses towards the ring on his finger. ]

[Lifts his hand away from her and up close to his face, staring at it. Hmm. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.]

I just thought it was a ring. What does magic feel like?

[ hmmMMMMMMMMMMM ]

[ There's a whole lot of quiet chirpy squeaky chirrupy thoughtful noises as she tries to figure out how to put words to something that just is ]

... When you're outside, and you feel the sun and the world all around you. Like that? Kind of? But inside.

[He's focusing on the ring, but, he's focusing on turning into a dragon which is not one of his powers, imagining how it feels be a dragon full of sun and one with all of nature doesn't work very well on a strange planet for an ability you don't have.]

Mm... I'll keep trying.

It's okay if it doesn't work like that, we'll figure it out. [ The tip of her tail swishes, almost like a wag. ]
