I see... then that changes things. I had thought that if memory was so important, that we must all know something—and had it removed for a reason.

A number of things could be happening here. It could be that they wish to exert some form of control over us by erasing our memories. Or it could be a side-effect to whatever magic they used to pull us here in the first place. Either way, they don't seem very competent at it.
