The Eleventh Trial

Who: everyone
When: Day 23, evening
Where: The Trial Zone

[Just as twilight darkens the clearing, you hear the train's customary shift, the sign of a Trial.

Outside in the clearing, a brick building has appeared. It's shabby, paint peeling from the heavy door, but the windows are full of neon signs advertising various brands of liquor. From inside you can hear the thumping of bass, and the faint sounds of a rowdy rock song.

A voice chimes in, lazy but amused.]

You all know what this is. I'm not "come hither"ing you. Just get in here.

[ Crow wants to kiss Rean SO BADLY but also is definitely gonna behave himself while his emotions are on a whisper. Partly because he likes it better when there's more fire in Rean, partly because it would feel weirdly like taking advantage of him. ]

I know you said you don't need sleep but would it help?

No. But I can meditate. It doesn't really restore energy but it's still somewhat refreshing.

You really are limited on your options, huh?

[ It sucks but that's not Rean's fault. ]

Well, why don't you try meditating for a bit? I'll even give it a shot myself. You can show me how.

You.... want to meditate?

[That seems unlike the Crow he's observed but he won't turn him down.]

I'd be happy to show you.

It doesn't hurt to try new things!

[ He absolutely does not have the temperament to get anything out of meditation but boredom and a desire to get up and do literally anything else, but he doesn't know that yet. It seems like a good way to keep Rean out of trouble! What Could Go Wrong. ]

[Rean will totally teach him! Or try his best.]

First get comfortable.

[ He sits down, loose-limbed and comfortable on the ground. ]

Alright, there's step one.

Comfortable? Now, there's a lot if ways to meditate. Just learning to clear your mind is the basic way to focus and keep orderly thoughts, but there's things like guided visualizations for various effects.

We're going to do the basic one though. Start to focus on breathing in and out, holding each breath a moment, counting but thinking of nothing.

That's going to be a lot harder than it sounds. All kinds of things are going to enter your head, your butt will itch, your nose will itch, you'll surely think of something urgent or distracting, but just take it in with each breath and let it out with each breath as best you can.

[ Crow takes in a breath slowly and holds it. One... two...

What does hapoen to the people who disappear from the train, anyway? He'd never considered it before, hadn't been bothered, but now he's curious. What happened to the people who were gone? Did they just... disappear? Did they know what was happening even as it did? Were they aware or did they just become... what? Nothing? Was it like dying? What's dying like? ....Is it any different from dying from one of these trials-- they already know that's possible. He could always ask Randy what it's like, but then he'd have to explain why he wants to know in the first place and He'd Rather Not.

Oops. He forgot to let his breath out. He does belatedly-- Rean was right, his nose does itch all of a sudden. He reaches up to scratch it.

Wait. That's not meditating.

[Rean hasn't really relaxed into meditation himself yet, watching Crow instead with distant amusement and fondness.]

Just keep letting things come and go. The most important thing is to breathe and keep at it, but mainly not to forget to breathe.

[ He opens his eye back up. ]

How long does it take for the "not thinking" part to work?

Depends on the person. I don't think most people will get it without a lot of practice. Emptying the mind is harder than you'd think. It's about the same as learning any new skill, it takes determination and patience before it pays off.

That makes sense.

[ He closes his eyes and takes another breath, determined to give it another try. ]

[personal profile] awakenerd 2019-05-22 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[He smiles faintly and this time he closes his eyes to sink into meditation himself, letting Crow be to work at it on his own.

His breathing falls so soft and even it's as if he's fallen asleep.]

[ Crow does not hit any real state of meditation. He ends up managing to count up to ten at any given time before he inevitably slides back into some inane thought or another that suddenly seems vitally important to work out.

He inevitably gives up-- for now, he tells himself, and it's fine not to be perfect right away. But he doesn't want to disturb Rean either, so he pulls out his chain and starts poking around on it.
