[If you decide to follow up on that and head in that direction, or are just out on the beach for other reasons, you'll find Eliza (in a cute two-piece) and Fang (in boring black board shorts, but check those hella scars) hanging out along the shoreline, a bottle or two of sunscreen and Thyme-colored towels at their feet! If you pass close enough you may be greeted by a friendly wave or a business-like nod.]

That's the purpose of the lessons. We won't be taking anyone out further than they could reach, anyway.

Mm, I have a little experience. Swimming in ponds and the like.

I probably won't be very good at it- I only know enough to get to shore in a few emergency situations.

Skill isn't a problem here-- it's what we're having lessons for!

Um, well, okay. I suppose it will be valuable to know, in certain situations.

It's good for fun and exercise, too. Do you know any strokes or how to correctly tread water?

[nihilmancy]

I can tread water. And, um, the breast stroke, I think? I've mostly only learned enough to get to land if a boat tips over. I come from a country with a few large rivers.

That's not a bad start! If you have those two things down, the main thing is to practice endurance. If you want though, I can teach you the crawl. It's a faster stroke than the breaststroke.

Oh, that would be useful. Easier to get away from crocodiles that way, right?

Oh gosh no. There's no swimming away from a crocodile that's decided it wants you.

I know. They kill quite a lot of people every year, where I'm from, so it was some grim humor. Hippopotami, too.

Do you live near the Nile?

[nihilmancy]

I haven't heard of the Nile. Most of Ta-Nisuty is along the Darhush and Hapi rivers, with several tributaries and streams and canals.

[But it is fantasy egypt, yeah]

Oh. It's a big river in my world. Hippos and crocodiles have ranges past the Nile, but that's where they're most known from.

The rivers are the biggest modes of transport, so the authorities need to cull them sometimes.
