It's strange that it appears to be preferring important memories. Maybe that's by design.

If it is trying to return us to the selves we were before, that would require the important memories.

Someone with no memories generates sparks just as well.

It gives us something to talk about?

Or else it is some sort of anchor to what remains of our worlds. If one works from the theory that we are part of the clean-up, then people, places and things we have strong feelings about would be the links from us outward.
