Where: Back To Your Regularly Scheduled Great Outdoors, Just outside the train

[ The beach fades away all at once, taking the cheery sunshine with it as evening hits all at once-- it melts away in a shower of sparkles as the familiar setting re-emerges. There are new stars in the sky above in clover pink, senna red, jasmine blue, and licorice violet.

Just before the beach disappears entirely, the bubbly voice speaks once more:

Wasn't that so much fun! You all rrrrrreally got to know each other, didn't you? Keep up the good work~!

[ If you had any alcohol in hand you still have it, otherwise everything from the trial is gone. ]

It's not as if space and time are opposites? They're just different elements. Just like fire and earth are different elements. They aren't opposed, they're just better aligned to different attributes.

As for your questions, you can change a battle orbment's locks, but unless you can change your own affinity... how do I explain?

A battle orbment is both a weapon and a finely tuned piece of equipment. Not tuning it is like trying to use a gun that's got its sights off and balance wrong. It'll be unwieldly, take longer, miss a lot, not be as strong. Tuning it against your affinity is like, I don't know, strapping that gun to the end of a broadsword. Sure, now you have more versatility, but it's practically useless versatilty. You can, theoretically, wield that, but it's just not going to yield strong results from either the sword or gun. It's the same way with orbments. Properly tuned they're a great tool, but if they're improperly balanced to you they're never going to give a smooth performance, and may even misfire or fail more often. You won't get even half as much from the quartz you slot.

Very rarely someone has total elemental balance, they can use an unlocked orbment totally fine, and that's the most versatile way, but most people need locks and tuning just like most people need a gun of the right weight or a sword that fits their stature. The analogy to other weapons isn't one for one but you'd need an actual orbal engineer to explain the nitty gritty of it.

For example if I tried to use Crow or Rufus's orbments I could, nothing could stop me, but it'd have to be an emergency to be worth struggling with someone else's tuned orbment.

[She has not stopped listening, and like, some of the tension bleeds out of her a little as he goes on.]

Thank you, Instructor. That is very informative and your comparisons salient and easily understood.

[she can remember everything he said to record it later, if she feels the need; she has good memory banks after all.

She really needs to take one apart after all.]

[Call me by my name.]

Nah, just your interest was nice though. It's fun sharing knowledge.

That is a simple, yet complicated question with a lot of nuance. It would be better to ask specific questions, because, as it stands, the answer is "it simply does". It is like moving a hand.

[she waves, helpfully, and then waves again and water appears in a swirling glittering ribbon.]
