Thumbs, right? And phalanxes?

Are human nails just for painting?

The thumbs help! Our proportions are more suited for dexterity if I want to be technical, since the thumbs are comparatively reduced and the metacarpals lengthened in apes that do still live in trees, but the phalanges do come into it. It's easier to illustrate with charts or skeletons— which I totally have a full set for! I have dragon, lizard, deer, and cat bones if you ever want a full demo.

But basically what's your claws is what would be the first digit of our fingers. Our nails protect our fingertips and provide a stiff surface for scratching, grooming, or other work. it's like having a pair of tweezers around all the time!

[ Wiggles, shuffles, and awkward hop-clambers down from the tree, coming over to join her in the sand pit instead ]

So, they're like tools. [ Looks at her (well, Eliza's-) fingers, turning her hand back and forth. ] My claws better for hunting ... but my finger-things are longer than a cat's or dog's.

[ She's got enough dexterity to pick things up with her forepaws, and to do Fun Things like ~~draw on walls~~ paint. Detail work though? Not so much. ]

[sticks a snuffly nose into her hair on impulse, just hey so THAT'S what I smell like]

I don't have any rat bones, but those might be a closer example than a cat's or a dog's. Rodents are great at clawed climbing and picking things up! Your paws are even a different shape than Isildur and Isolde's are, they're more made for running than you are.

[ HELLO SNUFFLES. laughs and reaches up a hand to bury it in her feathers, scritch-scratch. ]

Ooh! Rats! Rats are tasty. [ Meri that is not the point here. ] Isildur and Isolde aren't flyers, right? I can run, but that's more for playing than anything. I hunt from the sky.

Right! Isildur and Isolde can't fly at all, their wings are just for showing off, but they're as fast as horses on the ground.

[ Scritches the Good Spots behind the ears ]

That's fast! Bet I could still catch 'em though.
